Growing need for Empathy, Authenticity & Emotional Relatability in Remote Working

Recently, our training company BrandDisco , was requested to create and conduct a number of Emotional Intelligence Workshops with leaders and teams around how to use Emotional Intelligence awareness to feel more connected while leading & working from home.

As it turns out, Empathy, Authenticity and Emotional Relatability have become more important now than ever before in our steadily increasing virtual world, which largely dominates how we live and work in 2020.

Because of this new normal, (not-so-new for some), ‘remote work state’ status, studies show employees expressing a growing need for more empathy, authenticity and emotional relatable from their leaders and teams, vs. the super polished, uber-professional and process-driven approach of the past.

It’s easy to understand how this increased need comes as a result of our pro-longed lack of ‘real-life social interactions’ leaving us to compensate for this deficit through our ‘digital interactions’.

What this means for leaders is that they will need to become much more intentional about connecting emotionally with their teams, peers and partners to overcome this social interaction-void to be more effective in a growing era of virtual working, teaming and learning.

To do so, I offer 5-Simple Tips on how Empathy, Authenticity & Emotional Relatability can be delivered:

1. Relatable Profile Photo: Use a relatable/relaxed photo as a profile pic of you doing something fun or picture in a natural setting. (Authenticity is golden right now)

2. Morning Greetings: Greet people and say hello and/or good morning at the start of a meeting. (A good greeting goes a long way)

3. Pulse Checking: Make time for initial small talk before jumping into work mode.. Make sure people are okay. (Build the time in, forget about anal processes.)

4. Casual Lived-In Workspaces: Ditch the picture perfect “props” of your work space and instead work in a relatable setting some days (i.e. kitchen table, casual lived in space)

5. Create Virtual ‘Meet-Ups” Around Themes of Interests: Today many people associate meetings with work, however if you created a few fun and engagement themes of interest and called them internal ‘meet-ups’ around things people enjoy, you’d create a sense of community. (i.e. Yoga, Meditation, Cooking/Recipes, Pets, etc.)
